Enemy! Always There...
By Il-Whan "Camel " Song

Everybody calls him J.B. That man is the only man I don't like in Carbondale.
We met last summer in University Hall; I had been there for 2 months. J.B. used to be a student in CESL, but now, he is an undergraduate student at John A. Logan College.
His original nickname was J.C.: Jin Bim Cock. That was all the cocktail name he knew; however, he was confused about his nickname. J.A.? J.B.? J.C.? Eventually, he chose the middle.

J.B loves listening to music loudly, especially while drunken. I do, too. Moreover, we are the Koreans who keep eating Korean food at least one a day. He is good at boiling rice and I'm good at cooking side dishes; otherwise, both we are all thumbs about the other's cuisine. Therefore, we need each other to be alive in a foreign country even though we abhor each other. That is not the worst thing. Whenever we do something, stuff always happens.
Whenever we travel in the United States, we get lost even if we have a map. Whenever we buy something in a shopping mall, we always have some stuff to be refunded. Even the Wal Mart clerk who is responsible for customer service knows him. One day, we needed a taxi. J.B. called Yellow Cab, and said, "Let me send a taxi." Eventually, he got Yellow Cab Company to send us a taxi.
Well... one day, I called J.B. Nobody answered, and then I tried to leave a message on the answering machine of J.B's roommate: J.B and his roommate shared the phone. What I did was mumbling strangely. Nobody could understand. Moreover, I said the same word repeatedly over and over "Would you regard .. regard.. regard? ! ?"
Finally I had to go to J.B's room, and then re-record with my micro recorder: my micro recorder tape is the same as his roommate's answering machine tape. First, I recorded electronic sounds with my voice--"BEEP" and second, I changed my message. "Please say hello to J.B.!" In addition to the new message, I said a Korean greeting to replace the long former message. At last, I recorded electronic sounds with my voice "BEEP BEEP." Then I put the tape away. What crazy stuff, but it always happened to us.

Yeah! I can't live without struggling with him. We can speak Korean slang fluently, which we usually use and feel because we're of the same generation. Men! I maybe like him even though I cannot be fond of him.

My best friend, Ban Kyung
By Ji Sung Park
Ban Kyung is my best friend. I was in high school, I met him first.
I have known him since 1987. Ban who has a good temper was so smart.
We know everything about each other. When we graduated from high school, he entered the university directly. On the other hand, I failed to enter the university. In 1990, I was a student who failed a college entrance exam and was been cramming to try again. It was so painful for me. He helped me both physically and spiritually. Until now, I haven't forgotten that time.     Whenever I was mistaken about something, he pointed out the error and advised me on that.
Until 1990, he lived close to me. After 1990, he moved a distance away. Even though he moved a distance away, we often met each other until we joined the armed service. After we were discharged, we kept up our friendship until now.
We regard each other as a brother by blood. I can be convincedto continue our friendship until we die.
"A friend in need is a friend indeed." I think that we relate like that with each other. He is a handsome guy and a broad-minded person. He is really, really my best friend.

My best friend, Ji
By Kumi Ishihara
I have some best friends. One of them is a Korean girl whose name is Ji, who is 21 years old. She used to take same class with me which was GE 2. She has been my first international friend.
At first we did not talk each other very much. However, we became friends soon. She was always nice to me. She had known that I am always hungry in the morning. So, she sometimes brought snacks for me.
Also she was always fashionable. She has a sense of beauty. She and I are interested in fashion. So, we sometimes went shopping. And one day we did a fashion show for only two. We changed our hair color and wore the same kind of suits. We enjoyed it so much.
She likes to eat Chinese food and pizza too. She eats a lot of kinds of food. We also
drank and talked together a lot. Then we could not speak English very well, but we could understand each other.
I like her very much. She always can understand me. And she is so funny, smart, kind, and cute. However, she moved out of Illinois. She is living in California now. Actually, I miss her. However, we sometimes write letters. She told me " California is great!! I like it here. Come here." So, I will visit her this year.

My best friend, Kevin Woo
By Yu-cheng Chien

I have a lot of friends in my life, and Kevin Woo is my best friend among all of my friends. I met him in my senior high school in my country. His hobby is sports including bowling, baseball and basketball.
My favorite memory with my friend is when we studied in college. He always went to my house, then we drove our
motorcycles to return to school every Sunday night. On the way, we usually went to Hoen-San bowling hall and played some games then we went to the Shin-Lin night market to eat very delicious food, such as beef steak, dumplings, and so on.
In college, we always sat side by side and always were together, including playing basketball and pool, eating meals or seeing movies. So we are called "Twins" by our classmates.
I like him because he is kind and easy-going, and he has a good temper and is nice-looking. And we have known each other over 10 years. I seldom found him to lose his temper. So, someday, if you meet or become acquainted with him, I think you will be happy to know him.

My best friend, Byong Cheng
By Ji Hoon Kim
Byong Cheng, my best friend, who knows what I like and what I'm concerned with. He is really nice and kind to everybody.
I have known him for more than 8 years since high school. We've gone through many things, such as going out drinking, talking and studying together.
I believe that he is my best friend. I can trust him with all my heart.
When I was totally drunken and wasn't able to remember anything, he took care of me and brought me back home. After I knew what he did, I really appreciated him.
Even though he is a small guy, he has a strong personality and open mind to understand most people. Since I don't have any brothers, he is more like my brother. I feel that I will owe him something for a long time. If I have a chance to help him with anything, I would gratefully do that for him. He is a cool, kind and gentle man as I've ever met.
Sometimes I really miss my friends, especially, my best friend Byong Cheng. If someone asked me when I go back my country, who would you want to see first? I would definitely say Byong Cheng.

My best friends
By Seung Hyun Hwang

I have three best friends. I can't distinguish who is the best friend because the three of them are really good guys. And we have known each other over ten years. I still keep in touch with them.
One friend was my elementary school classmate, another friend was from middle school, and the other guy was a high school classmate. They didn't know each other until we graduated high school. But we know each other really well now.
My friends like music; of course I do, too. When one of my friends had to go to military service for over two years, we were very sad.
We live in different cities in Korea. One lives in Pusan, around five hours away by car; another friend lives in Daejoen two hours away; and the other friend lives in Sungnam one- and -half hours away, so we can't often meet. Even so we had a party every Christmas, New Year Day and our birthdays, and also we sometimes visited friends' houses.
We have never fought or troubled each other. We sometimes argue, but it's not serious. We really know each other well and give each other advise about our faults. Our friendship will never change.

My best friends, Ryoko and Miharu
By Mieko Kaburaya
I have two best friends. We met in junior high school. Their names are Ryoko and Miharu.
Ryoko was my classmate for three years in junior high school. She was the first person who spoke to me. My first impression was that she was a beautiful girl. She always had a smile on her face. She was active. And she attracted everyone.
She liked watching movies and playing. She not only watched plays but also acted in them. She had wanted to become an actress. She was a member of dramatic company. She auditioned many times. Although she didn't get the parts, she never gave up. So, I like her.
She likes fashion and cosmetics because she wanted to become an actress. She gives me information about fashion and cosmetics. She has another dream to go to Italy, so she has studied Italian. She visited Italy two years ago and she liked it. She likes leather shoes and bags. Italy is famous for good design of them. She wants to own and manage a leather shop, because there aren't leather goods which she likes in Japan. I like her characteristic which is to always have a dream.
When I was 14 years old, she introduced me to Miharu. She was a good swimmer. She likes mathematics. She used to teach us mathematics, even though we didn't like the subject.
When she was a high school student, she decided to become a physical therapist. She studied very hard so she passed the entrance examination. She worked in the hospital daytime. Then she went to school in the evening. She had earned her living by herself since she was 18 years old. I respect her, because I was supported by my parents until I graduated from the university.
She got married three years ago. She has a girl and is now pregnant. She is going to have a new baby in July. I'm looking forward to it. She is happy to have her family. I'm very happy because she is happy.

My best friends
By Min Hwan Kim
I have two best friends. We met in kindergarten when we were six years old, so I just remember about them in my youth.
We always played together. We had the same hobbies; our most favorite thing was also the same. We liked to play baseball. So we used to go to the playground with ball and glove after class. We liked to listen to rock music, to see the comedy cinema. After we graduated kindergarten, we proceeded to the same elementary school, but we were in different classes.
In middle and high school, we were studying at different schools, but we always met on every Monday. So we talked about our school, test scores and girlfriends. And we advised each other. After talking we used to listen to music and play basketball like our youth. Only different thing in our meeting is changing baseball to basketball. However, because of university entrance exams, we couldn't meet anymore for almost 1 year. We needed more study. So we used to call each other and cheered. We choose the same major though at different universities. It was education. We didn't talk about our major before exam is finished, so we were very surprised. We thought that our character look like each other growing up.
Now we are living in different places. I am studying English in America, another friend is studying in Korea, and the other friend is working very hard in military service, so now we can't meet each other. But we will live together in the future. After graduating from universities, we'll get jobs. And after we are married, we will get a big house and our three families will live together. That is our dream.

My best friend, Misako
By Nana Kikuchi
I have seven close friends in my country, Japan. One of my friends, Misako, was my class mate in elementary school. And also, we belonged to same basketball club then. We went to same junior high school, but we had to go to different high school due to Japanese education systems. Even though we could't see every day, we were keeping touch each other. Moreover, She introduced to me her good six friends, who went to same school as Misako. That's why I got seven cool friends. After we
graduated from high school, we saw almost everyday. In winter, we usually go snow boarding, I mean we often go travel somewhere depends on season. I miss them so much. Of course, sometimes we fight, but we become reconciled quickly because we know our personality and behave each other very well. On July 13th, One of the my seven friends, Akiko will get marry! I can't wait to go back Japan and see dear my friends.

We regard each other as a brother by blood. I can be convincedto continue our friendship until we die.
"A friend in need is a friend indeed." I think that we relate like that with each other. He is a handsome guy and a broad-minded person. He is really, really my best friend.

My Best Friend, Hideyuki Morimitsu
By Kenji Ogawa
When I was a high school student, I met him for the first time. His name is Hideyuki Morimitsu, 24 years old and studying to be an elementary school teacher. I thought he looked like a monkey because he was very short and eating a banana in the class when I saw first him. He also told me that he thought I looked like a dog the first time. I was not eating dogfood though.
He is very funny guy and has same hobbies with me such as .... I don't know. Actually we don't have specific same interests and hobbies but we have alike minds, thought, and sense of humor. I don't feel uncomfortable when I'm with him even though we don't say anything.
We went skiing in winter and to the sea in summer with many cans of beer. During summer vacation, we went to sea almost every day. We swam and looked at many fish in the sea, sometimes the girls on a beach.
We also sometimes went fishing. One day, we were using shrimp to catch fish but it was very bad day. We could not get many fish, so we decided to go to another place. He and I took some shrimp and went to different spots. After 15 minutes, when I looked at the place where we put our shrimp and cooler, a lot of seagulls were gathering and eating the shrimp. "Oh my god." We ran to the place and shouted to the seagulls, "Hey! What the hell are you doing?" However, it was too late. They ate everything. They didn't eat only the shrimp but also our a little fish we had caught. Besides, my friend's curry bread was eaten by the seagulls. We didn't have any choice except to go back and buy another bag of shrimp. We didn't do that though. We just tried to hunt seagulls
Last summer, when I went back to Japan and talked him, I didn't feel like we had not seen each other for long time. I just felt we met yesterday. I went to his house but he was not there so I just went in, took a can of beer, went to his room, and drank the beer. Then I felt sleepy so I decided to sleep. While I was sleeping in his room, he came back and just said, "What's up?" and I answered, "Not much." That's all. Even though we had not met and talked each other for eight months. Afterward, we went out.
I have not contacted him since I came back to the United States. I think nothing will ever change our friendship.

My Best Friend, "Hammer"
By Peter Chang
My best friend, Wang, has a big hand. Hammer we always called him, his nickname instead of a real name.
We had met in an auto company so many years ago. In this company we were a good staff who helped each other. I remember once I tried to solve some problems about a navigation system that was such a complex system. I needed to work on whole system very carefully. Otherwise, I would lose a good chance to solve problems. Besides, the manager who pushed me needed to figure out the problems before customers complained to Institute of Consumers. I felt a heavy press. Fortunately, Hammer helped me out of the urgent situation. Eventually, we solved the problems on time so that we acquired extra bonus in our salary.
Because we were paying of our own school expense, we chose night school to continue our education. Most of time we were talking about work and future. However, we lost contact just after I finished my military obligation. I had tried hard to contact Hammer but he never showed up.
Hammer is my best friend even though we have lost contact for a long time. In the future, I hope that we can meet again.

Couch Potato? TV maniac?
By  Il-Whan "Camel " Song
and Mieko  Kaburaya

How many couch potatoes exist on campus? We were curious about this, so we decided to inspect people's brains. Twenty people who were chosen randomly participated in our survey about "The Habits of Watching TV."
Eleven people are men, and nine are women.  Even though they are not representing most people, the result of the survey would be approximately the same as most people's opinion.
How much time do people watch TV a week?
45% of people watch TV for less 7 hours, another 45% for 7-14 hours, another 5% for 15-21 hours, and the other 5% for 21 hours.

According to the results, many people watch TV for less than 14 hours a week. In other words, most people don't watch TV over 2 hours  a day on average. In spite of our expectation, many couch potatoes are not found.
What do you  think about the interruption of TV commercials  in the middle of your favorite TV program?
About 35% of people don't like commercials, about 60% of them think it doesn't matter, and about 5% of them are fond of commercials. Those who don't like commercials said they can't concentrate on their favorite TV program and would regard a TV commercial as a disturbance. Those who don't care explained that ads are sometimes boring  and sometimes interesting.  Of the respondents who don't like it, 45% are men and 22% are women. Of those who don't care, 54% are men and 66% are women. Of those who like it, 11% are women. The people who answered "Good" also said that an ad is useful when they are getting food or going to the restroom. They spend TV commercial time as a break.

Do you usually watch TV with somebody?
60% of the people who participated in the survey enjoy watching TV with other people who are family or friends. People would rather watch TV with old friends and family than new friends. No female likes watching TV with new friends as well as strangers; however, some social males said that they could watch TV with a new friend as well as strangers.

Do you usually eat something while you are watch TV?
The answers to the questions  are that male who usually watch TV with others generally eat something, yet females who usually watch TV with others generally don't eat. This is related to what programs they prefer. For instance, men are fond of sports programs. On the other hand women steep themselves in sitcoms and drama. The graph below shows the interrelation.

Through this survey, even though we can't find out who are couch potatoes, we learned the habits of American people approximately. That couch potatoes are numerable in the US maybe exaggerated by the media itself. Moreover, the eating-habits difference between men and women  is remarkable while they are watching TV. At last, thanks to the people who participated in this survey!

Traveling

By
Hoon Kim, Yu Cheng Chien and Min Hwan Kim

Nowadays, most people are very interested in travel and they spend lots of money traveling. Therefore, our group made a survey about travel. We tried to show how people get the information about travel, which countries they want to visit, what they learned through travel and what the most impressive thing  was during travel.
We asked 6 questions. We interviewed 20 American students, 13 of them were male and 7 of them were female. Our interviews were done on the S.I.U. campus, in dorms, and on the street. Their ages are listed in the chart below.

In this question, "If you have a chance to travel, where would you want to go first?", most respondents wanted to go to Europe. Furthermore, more men wanted to go to Europe than women. For the second, they wanted to go to islands, such as Hawaii and Guam. But only  men wanted to go there. It is notable that male respondents wanted go to different countries; females preferred  Europe and Africa. Consequently, this question proves that most people prefer Europe over other places, and that male respondents want to go to more countries than female.

To the question "What did you learn from traveling?", respondents replied many things. The first reason why they want to go abroad was for different countries' cultures. And second was to learn their languages; third one was to have new experiences. Consequently, this question proves that most people go on a trip to learn something new that they didn't know before. Also, it shows that they can get lots of knowledge and experience through traveling.

In the next question, "Among the places you have traveled, what was the most impressive to you?", most respondents said the food, the landscape and folk customs were the most impressive to them.
As the world is getting closer, more people have more chances to visit foreign countries than before. In the past, a few people had gone abroad to travel. However, nowadays, a lot of people have already visited life in foreign countries. They want to experience new cultures which are different from theirs and to meet different countries' people through travel. They think different  experiences which they had during travel help to extend their common knowledge. In addition, people believe that travel makes them feel better and to relax, escaping from their daily lives.

They prefer to drink at their home or friends house than bars. In our opinion, there are many parties in their or friends' home. Therefore, these answers are a lot.
We also surveyed about American students' favorite bar in Carbondale. There are not many bars at Carbondale. They like Stix first, and Cooper Dragon and Pinch Penny are the second-favorite place.

EAT! EAT! EAT!

By Peter  Chang
and Kenji  Ogawa
"Favorite Food" is our topic of survey. No doubt, both Kenji and Peter are Oriental people who prefer Oriental food. Moreover, we are gluttonous people, so we chose "Favorite Food" for our topic.
There are 21 students  who answered our questions. Our survey results are as follows: of 21 students, 10 are male and 11 are female. All of them are American. The females' ages are:  below 19:  3 people; 20 to 29: 5 people; and above 30: 2 people. The males' ages are mostly between 20 to 29; only one person is over 30.
The answers to the number one question of "What is your favorite food?" (except America food), 14 people answered Asian food, 6 people answered European food and only one chose Mexican\ food.

The fourth and last questions asked students about where and why. Ten people said in a restaurant, 8 people answered in his/ her house , 3 people said in a friend's house, and one said in a private club. According to the lists, many men eat at a restaurant; on the other hand, women eat at home or a friend's house.
"Why chose this kind of food?" In this question, most people answered because of taste. Only one person said because of price. We asked one woman who said she eats at a restaurant, "Why you want to eat at restaurant?" She said, "No special reason. I'm just too lazy to cook it."
