Get on the TESLJob list

1. Send a blank e-mail to TESLJOB-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

or 2. Going to the website and following the JOIN THIS GROUP procedures.

Use TESL-L & TESLJB-L

Note: The procedures below may no longer be valid, since the server has moved and the branches are not connected to the main TESL-L. They remain here until there is further word about correct procedures.

TESL-L and TESLJB-L are computer networks which you can use to stay informed and find out about job openings. This is how to get on them.

1. Get an e-mail account. Be willing to check your computer and dump messages regularly; if you don't, your box will overflow regularly.

2. Send a message to listserv@cunyvm.cuny.edu. As the body of the message (omit the subject line), write SUBSCRIBE TESL-L YRNAME where YRNAME is your name, however you want it to appear in their directory. Capitals or small letters are not important.

3. Once you wait about three minutes, you will be an official member of the TESL-L network. You may read the welcoming messages and learn about the various branches: TESLCA-L (Computer-Assisted Language Learning), TESLIE-L (for Intensive English Programs), etc. TESLJB-L is one of these. CAUTION: The TESL-L network itself generates 20 or more messages a day of general interest to all ESL/EFL teachers. This may be too much for you. If so:

Write listserv@cunyvm.cuny.edu; as body of message, write SET TESL-L NOMAIL. This time, no name is necessary. The computer receives your command and acts upon it, as long as you do it from your computer. It will hold your mail, but still allow you to be a member.

4. As a member, you can now subscribe to TESLJB-L. Write listserv@cunyvm.cuny.edu; as the body of your message, write: SUBSCRIBE TESLJB-L YRNAME.

The job network is a network for employment concerns, so some messages deal with working conditions, credentials, etc. and are not job notices as such. However, you should receive job notices from around the world at a rate of about 10 per week. Keep checking your e-mail; do not let your box overflow. If you go on vacation, set TESLJB-L to NOMAIL in the same way you did it with TESL-L; when you come back, reset it to MAIL with SET TESLJB-L MAIL just as the instructions will tell you. If you're completely sick of it, have found your job, or are leaving Carbondale, UNSUBSCRIBE TESL-L and UNSUBSCRIBE TESLJB-L. Again you no longer need your name. It's helpful to remember that the "listserv" is just a computer that responds to the body of your messages; to communicate with real people, read and follow the welcoming messages.

USE TESLJB-L to get specific job listings:

for example, to get information on teaching opportunities in Nepal:
follow the instructions to search the archives here
send the following message:

search Nepal in TESLJB-L since August 2003

to:

LISTSERV@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU

You'll get back a list of posts and end up sending a request that looks like this:

GETPOST TESLJB-L 13947 13676

again to

LISTSERV@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU

to get copies of both posts.
